Skates
To play Roller Derby, firstly you will need a good pair of skates. These need to be of a low ankle variety as Derby requires lots of flexibility. As a beginner a standard pair of soft ankle disco skates will suffice, but you should consider purchasing a specific derby skate as soon as possible.

There are several types of skates available.
A basic derby skate will cost in the region of £90 – £120. This will buy you a PVC boot which should last you six months to a year of training and some basic wheels and bearings. Upgrading your wheels and bearings will improve the performance of your skates, buying toe guards will protect your boot from general wear and tear.
Once you reach an intermediate to advanced level you should consider purchasing a leather boot, which will form better to your feet giving a more comfortable skate and, with careful maintenance, should last you a lifetime. Leather Roller Derby skates start in the region of £250)
Protection
Roller Derby is a rough sport, which is why protection is so important. You will need to purchase a helmet, knee pads, some elbow pads, wrist guards and a mouth guard. Helmets should be of a skateboard/BMX style and knee pads should be heavy duty ‘ramp’ pad style. Mouth guards can be purchased for as little as £1.50, but for around £30 – £60 you can purchase a dentist moulded one for better protection and more comfortable fit.
