Who are we?
We are a Roller Derby team formed in May 2010. One of our main goals is to allow women (and men) of all shapes, sizes, fitness and backgrounds to become part of this exciting sport. All we ask is that you are over 18, and dedicated to training hard. We intend to compete in bouts around the UK and eventually worldwide. So, read on to find out how to become part of this exciting journey…
What is Roller Derby?
Roller Derby is a full contact, fast-paced sport played on quad roller skates. Two teams of five players – four blockers who make up a pack and one jammer – attempt to score points by getting their jammer through the pack.
How do I get involved?
The best way to get involved is to come along to one of our open practices as a spectator, or to one of our designated fresh meat nights.
Where can I get extra practice?
The Sycamore Centre in Nottingham hosts an open skate session for all abilities on a Tuesday evening, where skate hire is also available. A little further afield there is Roller World in Derby that is well worth a visit. Or if the weather is nice why not go on an outdoor skate? The Nottingham Skaters run a street skate most Wednesday evenings (for this we recommend you purchase outdoor wheels).
How do I become a member?
Once you have attended regular sessions for two months you will be given the option to become a member of the Hellfire Harlots. This will give you the opportunity to pay monthly rather than weekly, register your Derby name and you’l also receive a Harlot gift pack including member only merchandise and information booklets.
What if I don’t have my own equipment but would like to purchase some?
If you are on a tight budget we recommend you purchase some basic disco quads for around £40. For those who want to make an investment, we recommend a solid beginner skate in the region of £100 – £120 by a Derby brand such as Reidell, Suregrip or Roller Derby. You will also need wrist guards, elbow pads, knee pads, a helmet and a mouth guard to play. Ask one of our friendly team members for advice on these, including where you can purchase a full starter kit.
I’m not sure I want to skate/play derby. Can I still be involved?
Yes! This is very much a community based sport. As well as female Derby participants we also require male and female skating referees, non-skating officials, supporters and fans. So, there really is a place for everyone within Hellfire Harlots.
