The Hellfire Harlots and the Liverpool Roller Birds
One of the reasons I got into Roller derby was a good friend of mine, Cat. Who started skating with Liverpool Roller Birds late last year.
Yesterday, Finn Furious, Kitty Fury, Becky Thump, Leah Botomi, Carrie Cyanide, Steve Stifle’her and myself headed over to Liverpool to visit them.
We were up bright and early and left Nottingham around 8am. The ride over went quite well until we took a wrong turn and started heading towards Birmingham. Oh well, 10 miles later we were back on track and heading in the right direction. Due to this and bad traffic we arrived about 20 minutes late.
Once there we quickly kitted up and got ourselves warmed up. Today’s session was coached by Mickey Hard-Knox. The Liverpool Roller Birds split their practice into two, the first half is for the chicks (the beginners) and the second half is for the Birds (the more advanced). We did lots of awesome drills that involved stepping to help manoeuvrability through the pack as well as work on crossovers and doing our 25 laps (to pass your minimum skills you need to be able to skate 25 laps in 5 minutes). We soon moved onto the Birds session, after a quick warm up we were one to some pack work and scrimmaging. We all got to have a go at each position within the pack and got some great practice at forming (and breaking down) walls.
After practice we headed over to Keith’s (a local restaurant) for some yummy and well deserved food. Just before heading home we found a local shop selling freshly made ice cream. A quick ice cream cone later and we were on our way home.
We really had an awesome day and it was great to meet some more people from the Roller Derby Community.
