9 months hard work…

Its been 9 months since I started skating. I could have had a child by now! But no, my achievement is slightly more selfish…I am finally getting to participate in my first Roller Derby bout!

When I first started all my efforts went into learning to skate, then once I’d mastered spending more time on my feet than on my arse, my main goal was to pass minimum skills. As someone with no athletisism, and a fairly lazy disposition I always knew becoming a roller girl was going to take a lot of effort. Since January I have trained at least twice, anywhere up to 6 times a week but I have loved every second of it. So, arriving to a Dolly Rockits practice in July to find out they were testing minimum skills, and to actually pass was a bit of shock, but one of my best Derby moments so far.

Suddenly my main goal was complete! But now it was time for the real graft….the real nitty gritty, learning the game, playing the game, and learning how to win it!

We were asked by the Dolly Rockit Rollers to submit 3 girls into a black and white bout. So myself, my lovely wife Eve N Deadlier and awesome Joannasaurus jumped at the chance.

All of us were a little aprehensive. Are we good enough? Are we ready? But in the 6 weeks since we found out, we’ve put extra effort into making sure we’re up the scratch with all the other B players, and I think the three of us stand a good chance of performing really well!

Unfortunately I ended up in the oposing team to my fellow Harlots, but whoever wins we’ll be happy to have taken part and played with our derby sisters.

Next week is a bootcamp for inexperienced girls, and I will get to skate for the first time with some of my Bandit team mates which I’m really looking forward to. The other day my gold hot pants arrived (our team colours are gold and black!) so I’m feeling pretty prepared, and more excited than nervous now.

I think it will be a different story when I’m standing behind that pivot line waiting for the first whistle to go on the 25th of September…

To see what my wife has to say on the subject hop over to her blog to see her side of the story.

Me skating in January - looking scared!
